Configuring Remote Devices for CygNet Measurement

A remote device must be properly configured for CygNet Measurement in order to provide automatic data retrieval of electronic flow measurement (EFM) data for the system.

Before it can be added to CygNet Measurement, a remote device must fulfill both of the following conditions.

Supported EFM data groups for use with CygNet Measurement include FMS and FMS Legacy. A device can contain only FMS or only FMS Legacy data groups; FMS Legacy data groups are only used when FMS data groups are not available for the specified device. When a Node is configured with FMS Legacy data groups and an FMS command executed against it contains a command parameter that does not apply to the FMS Legacy version, the parameter will be ignored and the result will be listed in the command log.

Note: EFM (electronic flow measurement, e.g. FMS and FMS Legacy) data groups may have dependencies on non-EFM data groups. To find out if the EFM data groups for your device type have dependencies on other data groups, and if there are any special data group configuration parameters or usage notes for your device type, see Device Template Files and EFM Data Items and the corresponding EFM Data Groups documents for your device type in the Remote Devices section.

Using FMS or FMS Legacy Data Groups

Devices use equipment interface engines (EIEs) to handle device data communication tasks, utilizing either FMS or FMS Legacy data groups depending on device/EIE type.

FMS Data Groups

The following CygNet EIEs utilize FMS data groups to support a variety of remote field device types for CygNet Measurement.

FMS Legacy Data Groups

The following CygNet EIEs utilize FMS Legacy data groups to support a variety of remote field device types for CygNet Measurement.

See EFM Data Groups in the Devices section for information about electronic flow measurement (EFM) data groups supported by CygNet EIEs.

Configuring a Remote Device With FMS or FMS Legacy Data Groups

Once you have verified that all of the devices desired for CygNet Measurement exist in CygNet SCADA, the following steps will help you configure your remote devices utilizing either FMS or FMS Legacy data groups.

  1. Verify addition of FMS or FMS Legacy data groups to the device
  2. Add FMS or FMS Legacy data groups to the device, as needed
  3. Verify SCADA system retrieval of FMS or FMS Legacy data groups from the device

I. To Verify If FMS (or FMS Legacy) Data Groups Have Been Added to the Device

  1. Using CygNet Explorer, click DDS (Device Definition Service) in the service hierarchy.
  2. In the service pane, either double-click on the device to be configured for FMS or right-click on the device and then click Properties to access the device property pages.
  3. In the Properties dialog box, click the Data Group tab to view the list of data groups configured for the device.
  4. Verify that all desired FMS (or FMS Legacy) data groups are listed.

If all FMS (or FMS Legacy) data groups are listed, continue to verification of SCADA data group retrieval (III). If any or all FMS (or FMS Legacy) data groups are missing, continue to addition of data groups to the device (II).

II. To Add FMS (or FMS Legacy) Data Groups to the Device

  1. Using CygNet Explorer, click DDS (Device Definition Service) in the service hierarchy.
  2. In the service pane, either double-click on the device to be configured for FMS or right-click on the device and then click Properties to access the device property pages.
  3. In the Properties dialog box, click the Data Group tab to view the list of data groups configured for the device.
  4. Click Add.
  1. Select FMS Configuration and click OK.
  2. In the Device # box, type the FMS facility number.
  3. In the Facility ID box, select the ID of the facility for the data group.
  4. Configure any other required data group properties.
  5. Click OK.
  1. Repeat step 4 for any FMS (or FMS Legacy) data groups applicable to your device type.

Once you have properly configured the device with FMS (or FMS Legacy) data groups, verify that the SCADA system can retrieve them (III).

III. To Verify that the SCADA System can Retrieve FMS (or FMS Legacy) Data Groups from the Device

  1. Using CygNet Explorer, click DDS in the service hierarchy.
  2. In the service pane, either double-click on the device to be configured for FMS or right-click on the device and then click Properties to access the device property pages.
  3. In the Properties dialog box, click the Data Group tab to view the list of data groups configured for the device.
  4. In the data group list, either double-click FMS Configuration, or click FMS Configuration and then click View Data, to view the FMS Configuration data for the selected device.
  5. Click Get from RTU to request data.
  6. Verify that the data is successfully retrieved.
